  Traditional Herbs For Good Health

Author: Yap Heen Min

The global herb garden has about 260,000 plant species with potential health benefits. However, only 10% of these plants have been researched so far.

Back in Malaysia, a vast array of herbs are used by the different ethnic groups. For generations, these herbs have helped Malaysians maintain overall wellness or treat specific illnesses. We have Tongkat Ali with its reputation for boosting men’s health and its counterpart Kacip Fatimah for restoring women’s strength after childbirth.

There is also ginseng to perk up the mind for a mental task or dong quai to regulate menstrual cycles. Ginger tea relieves nausea and tumeric clears up the skin. In short, we have herbs for numerous purposes - to reduce pain, soothe inflammation, restore energy, improve blood circulation, stimulate immune functions, relieve constipation, relax strained muscles, support digestion, kill germs or simply freshen our breath!

Herbs come in many forms, too. For example, leaves (pegaga, mint), roots (ginseng, liquorice), flowers (chrysanthemum, cloves), fruits (kei chi, nutmeg), bark (cinnamon) and seeds (lotus, mustard). Likewise, herbs can be prepared in many ways; as a healthful ulam or salad, a refreshing beverage, a nourishing soup or as an ingredient in a dish. Herbal goodness also comes bottled in shampoos, facial creams, cosmetics, perfumes and even toothpastes.

Most traditional herbs complement conventional medicines in treating a health problem. However, certain drugs may not go well with some herbs. So, do consult your doctor. Nevertheless, many people take herbal preparations just to maintain energy and general health.

Too often, herbs are linked to bitterness. On the contrary, herbs can do wonders to food. For instance, our mouth-watering laksa will lose its distinctive aroma without the fragrant kesom, wild ginger flower and mint. And our new MAGGI® Nature’s Treat Rice Porridge are equally delicious with the complete goodness of Kei Chi essence for the Chinese range, and Pegaga essence for the Malay variants.  Pegaga builds energy and helps in blood circulation while Kei Chi has an established reputation for improving eyesight and enhancing immune functions. So, delicious foods and traditional herbs can go hand-in-hand! However, remember that herbs work best when taken regularly and habitually.

If you are not already benefiting from herbs, why not give these modest plants a chance?
