While cooking with your children can be a fun thing to do, it’s essential to supervise them at all times. Before you start cooking, inform them about the safety and hygiene rules and explain why some things in the kitchen are dangerous and why they have to stay away from it. 

Here are a list of safety tips on how you can keep children safe in the kitchen:

1. Put on an apron for them. Never let them wear loose clothes with baggy sleeves that could catch fire or long sleeves which risk getting caught on handles or dipping into saucepans.

2. Get them to wash their hands with soap and water. If they’re going to knead dough or mix ingredients with their hands, make sure their hands are clean. Remind them to wash again after the cooking’s complete. Tell them that this is one of the best ways to keep harmful bacteria from spreading. 

3. Prepare all the ingredients before cooking. By doing so, you can pay full attention to what your child is doing and not leave them unattended at any time. 

4. Never let children taste uncooked ingredients such as cake or cookie batter. Wait until the food is cooked before sampling it to avoid food poisoning. 

5. Let them use cooking supplies that will not break, ones that are made from plastic or stainless-steel. 

6. If your child insist on wanting to cut an ingredient, let them use a plastic or butter knife.

7. Create a space for them. Let them sit at place where it’s not too high. If they have a kid-sized table in their playroom, clean it and bring it into the kitchen. 

8. Always keep an eye on them. Never let children go near hot stoves, simmering liquid and food that’s letting out steam. Constantly remind children that stoves, ovens, pans, and dishes can be very hot.

9. Practice good clean-up habits. Inform your children how raw meat, seafood and eggs must be kept away from other ingredients. Keep kitchen surfaces, cutting boards and bowls clean at all times and your workstation tidy to prevent any kind of mishaps. 

10. Take your time. Never teach your children to cook when you’re in a hurry to prepare a meal. Involve them in cooking activities when you’re relaxed so that you can place a 100% of your attention on your child and the meal preparation.
