8 Tips to Help You Save Money, Time and Be Healthy  

With our busy schedules these days, preparing wholesome meals for the family sometimes becomes a daunting task. So, we tend to opt for take-outs or end up dining out. Although these conveniences can be a great time saver and a quick solution during these busy days, you end up splurging more when eating out compared to eating at home. 

With the rising cost of things, it’s time for us to reconsider the value of home cooking without the need to compromise of quality or taste. Here are 8 tips on how to prepare nutritious and delicious meals every day of the week for your family without needlessly wasting your time and money. 

1. Prepare A Grocery List

Before going to the supermarket, create a grocery list based on the meal plan that you have prepared. If you don’t have a meal plan, check your inventory to see what you already have and use as much of that as possible.

2. Don’t Overstock Unless There’s A Need To

Unless something is offered at a discounted price, only pick up one or two of the item. Never overstock because most things go to waste due to this. In other words, stock up but don’t hoard. 

3. Freeze!

If you notice that a food item is about to expire, freeze them immediately or if there’s a sale on milk or meat, you can stock up and store them for later use. Freezing is an effective way to preserve perishables because freezing prevents the growth of bacteria, yeasts and moulds that cause food spoilage and food poisoning. Nevertheless, when making bulk purchases, be practical and buy only as much as you can finish within a certain period of time. 

Here’s a tip: Place the items in freezer bags and use a permanent marker to mark the date of purchase on the freezer bag.

4. Use Up Leftovers

Throwing out those leftovers is like throwing money away. If you have leftover meat or vegetables from last night’s dinner, cook up some fried rice, prepare a sandwich or incorporate them into a salad for lunch the next day. It’s a great way to make sure you’re not wasting any leftovers and it helps you eat healthy, save money and save time throughout the day. Just make sure you have sealable storage containers on hand to save leftovers. 

5. Bigger Isn’t Always Better (Or Cheaper)

Don’t just reach for the biggest package at the supermarket. Compare prices and look out for the price per ounce or unit, on the price tag.

6. Buy Whole

Instead of buying pieces of chicken, buy a whole bird because it’s more value for money compared to buying a pack of chicken breasts. You can then use the different parts of the chicken for preparing different types of meals and even use the bones to make stock. The same goes with some vegetables; full heads of lettuce cost less than bags of salad greens. 

7. Double It Up

When preparing a dish, cook a double portion of the meal and freeze half for another day. You don’t just save time but you also save on the gas or electricity required to prepare another meal from scratch.  

8. Stop Using Paper Towels

Instead of using paper towels all the time, use old kitchen towels or cut-up t-shirts to clean up spills. Use paper towels only when necessary, for example, when you need to drain oil from fried food.
